Astrophotos

A portfolio of night sky photos

This is a collection of photos of the night sky. I have taken most of these using my telescope (a Skywatcher 300P 12" Dobsonian) and one of two cameras, a Celestron Neximage 10 Planetary Camera or a Canon EOS 250D DSLR. I usually use stacking sofware like Registax to reduce the level of noise and bring out finer details. My favourite object to photograph is the Moon, thanks to the amount of detail you can see on the surface (and since people have been there!). The first astrophoto I ever took with the Neximage camera was of the Moon's Mare Imbrium region. The photos are (roughly) sorted by the object of interest.

Lunar Photos

Moon's Mare Imbrium, 19th May 2019

Waxing Crescent Moon mosaic, 10% phase, 27th March 2020

Moon's Mare Imbrium, Mare Serenitatis, and surrounding regions, mosaic, 1st May 2020

Venus

The phases of the planet Venus change as it orbits the Sun. Here I have some pictures taken of the planet in the months leading up to its closest approach to Earth in June 2020.

Venus, 54% phase, 20th March 2020

Venus, 43% phase, 7th April 2020

Venus, 25% phase, 1st May 2020

Venus, 14% phase, 13th May 2020

Comparison of the above 4 photos, showing Venus' changing phase and angular size (from 22 arcseconds to 47 arcseconds) over time.

Mars

Mars with dark regions and South Pole visible, 22nd November 2020

Comet NEOWISE

In July of 2020, the comet known as C/2020 F3 NEOWISE became bright enough to be visible to the naked eye. I was lucky enough to be able to photograph the comet at this time.

Comet NEOWISE, 11th July 2020

Milky Way and Constellations

Milky Way, 10th July 2020

Orion Constellation (with Orion Nebula), 15th March 2020
